A first-grader already reading 'chapter books' seemed to be having trouble associating what was on the music pages (of the method book I prefer) with what she was supposed to be doing on the keyboard.

I switched her to this book for a while, which starts out with less. Music symbolism (no staff, no rests, no clefs, one hand at a time) but which teaches the beginner to recognize that notes go up and down, they have names, and they have different count values. By page 28 the treble staff is introduced and from there your typical progression. I have a 7 year old little girl. I bought this book for her at Christmas.

It is easy enough for her and her friends to figure out how to play some of the songs. I can play the songs that I am familiar with like old Mcdonald.
